Weekly Photo Challenge: Split-Second Story

IMG_1146

In this week’s photo challenge,  document a moment in time through a single image. In this split-second story, my niece is capturing an image of this street musician while I’m photographing her and the street scene. In a split second, you can experience just about anything in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Life on Jackson Street

2014_05_26_9999_164-2

We passed this house on our way back from South Carolina to our home in Florida, and being armed with my camera, I was able to get this fairly decent shot while whizzing by in the car. This, to me, is the epitome of life in the South – the huge Oak tree, the front porch with columns, the hanging swing, the rockers, and the tin roof – that’s the Southern-style house. I think life must be pretty good along Jackson Street, even though there’s a road right in front of the house, it’s one less traveled.

This Is the Color of Spring … And a Bit of History

2014_05_24_9999_4

The happy, happy flowers here dwell along Lake Greenwood in Ninety Six, South Carolina. Yep, that’s the town’s name, Ninety Six.

So how did it get its name? Some say that most likely, Ninety Six was named when a surveyor estimated that it was ninety six miles to Keowee, the capital of the Cherokee nation. Several battles were fought there. The first Revolutionary War land battle in the South was fought at Ninety Six November 19-21, 1775. Later, considered a major back-country outpost, British forces fortified Ninety Six, building a stockade around the village; at one corner they constructed a star-shaped fort of massive earthen embankments. Inside Star Fort, the British held out for 28 days in May through June, 1781 against a siege by General Nathaniel Greene and his American Continental Army. There’s a lot more history about this little town in South Carolina, and I encourage you to read it! Remnants of the fortress remain. My little family visited the historical national park years ago in May, and let me tell you, it is wicked hot outside. We just could not imagine wearing wool suits and surviving! Makes you wonder how many died of heat stroke.

We have a yearly family reunion at my Aunt and Uncle’s home on Lake Greenwood, that area is such a beautiful place. No wonder all of the plants and flowers thrive there!

What Is It?!? – Week 21/52

The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are. – Joseph Campbell

It’s been busy here over at Casa Cassidy, and by busy I mean overwhelming. Already the end of a school year, and I swear that school just started! Summer approaches and I’m ready for some pool time. Sadly, I have no pool. 😉 So here is your 21st weekly “what is it?!?” mystery picture. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Was That?!? Week 20/52 (Last Week’s Picture)

Brenda started off with, “Beer? Or ginger ale?” Not carbonation, it’s … “bubbles?” Kind of. Bubbles from what? One ding! “soap?” Not soap. “Schelley, you are tricky. I feel like I’ve seen this one before and gone through the same guessing pattern. And still I can’t remember the answer. Hmmm…. Is it edible? Did you change the color? Is it oil?” LOL! It is edible. I did not change the color. It isn’t oil. But I think that’s the picture you are remembering. Tracey jumped in, “Champagne?” Not champagne. It’s not carbonation, it’s … That Montreal Girl guessed, “7 up?” Not 7 up. Not carbonation, it’s … (Anyone know what I’m getting at here?) “Water?” It is water, do you know what FORM of water?” It’s not carbonation, it’s … One ding! “Dear lord … I’m stuck lol”  Hmmmm, it’s how that water formed that way. Does that help? “Nope lol I am really having a blond week” “Good grief, I still can’t figure it out lol” Preeti guessed, “Soda.” Not soda. Not carbonation, it’s … Jude mused, “I’m going for champagne – all those bubbles – get right up your nose” And I can feel my nose tickle! Alas, it’s not champagne. It’s not carbonation, it’s … “frog-spawn????” LOLOL! Nope, ribbit. Sarah guessed, “I wonder if it’s a glass ornament?” Not a glass ornament. Bill said, “I would’ve guessed air bubbles in wax, like an ornamental candle.” Not bubbles in wax, but love that perspective!  Sébastien said, “Looks like a body wash/shampoo that was shaken.” Not any type of body wash or shampoo. But you’re right, it does look like soap bubbles. Tracey said, “A sweaty glass of iced water? I’m totally no good at this.” Well, it is water, but not from a sweaty glass of iced water. So do you know what FORM of water this is? One ding so far! Sarah jumped back in, “Condensation?” Ding ding ding!

Yes, what you saw was condensation caused by water in a plastic bottle sitting out in the sun.

What Is It?!? – Week 20/52

Every single journey that I’ve embarked on, I’ve learned something new. – Shailene Woodley

Let’s see how this picture fares the guessing game of the week. With that said, your 20th weekly “what is it?!?” picture is ready for your guessing pleasure. Can you tell? Do you know?

What Was That?!? ((Last Week’s Picture) – Week 19/52

Over in Facebook land, Kristin started the guessing game with, “does it start with a B and end with an i?” Why yes it does, unless you’re guessing bikini. Stephanie guessed, “jasmine!” Not jasmine. Lily mused, “Asparagus or broccoli?” One of those answers is correct. Dan guessed it, “BROCCOLI!” And over here in WordPress.com land, Sarah guessed it right away, “Looks like broccoli?” Ding ding ding! Ding ding ding! Ding ding ding! Ding ding ding! Four rounds of winnings ding-ding-dings for Kristin, Lily, Dan, and Sarah. Wow!

So yes, what you saw was broccoli; regardless this one was guessed almost immediately, it was still fun, eh?

image

P.S. I took this picture with my macro lens attachment for my iPhone while eating dinner with my son; we were talking about how the broccoli looks like trees. Suddenly I was inspired! You never know until you look.
