Day 100 – Release the Kraken

Perseverance, secret of all triumphs. – Victor Hugo

I have been trying to explain to my son that perseverance pays off, that it’s sticking with something even though you don’t understand, even though it’s difficult, that you just don’t quit because whatever you’re doing isn’t simple … and once you figure it out, you’re triumphant … and nothing beats that feeling of achievement.

Such is life. There’s no instruction booklet, and “simple” is merely a word in the dictionary. It’s the hard stuff in life that makes us stronger, ready to accept – and persevere – through life’s challenges. Like fractions and decimals, which is Ian’s current nemesis. (And I can so empathize, that proverbial light bulb never lit up until *after* my math tests.)

Now that I’m 100 days into this 365-day project, you’d think it would be easy for me to figure out what I’m going to photograph. Not the case at all! But I persevere! (And so do the rest of you with your 365-day projects, congratulations on making it to Day 100!)

Today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture is ready for you to guess. My muse led me to this. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 99)

The last time I posted this subject (yes, sneaky me), it was guessed right away. This time around, the angle I happened to photograph, made it look like a Ruffles potato chip, so I thought I might as well see what it looks like to the rest of you. And here are the results: close up of a paper towel or napkin withe the wavy ridges (or foam on a latte), a cracker or cookie, crumbs, waffle cone, and a pizzelle. Funny, most of these are food items! But what you saw (and what Gail finally guessed after I gave a hint), is the ridges on the top of a seashell. Albeit a different seashell than the previous post! I just happened to look at it differently. 🙂

Day 95 – Two Shots

I think I’ve discovered the secret of life – you just hang around until you get used to it. – Charles M. Schulz

Today I’m posting a picture that I’m sure is just way too easy, but my mind is basically a big bowl of jello right now, and my muse has run away and hidden in a nice, safe place. I was the lucky recipient of two shots today, one on the left side of my neck, and the other in my left shoulder’s trigger point. Fortunately, I’m pain free for the day, but unfortunately, a walking zombie, with no inclination to pick up my heavy camera and figure out just what in the heck to photograph today!

So I reached into my “in case” bucket and pulled out today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture. This is a two-shot picture, meaning even if you figure out what the “thing” is, you’ve got to figure out “where” or “what” it’s on. Can you tell? Do you know?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 94)

I had several views to choose from for yesterday’s subject, but I chose the one that aesthetically was the prettiest. Perhaps I should have chosen a different one, as it was guessed fairly quickly. It definitely looks like glass that was cracked, but it wasn’t a cracked iPad. (Been there, done that, it sucked.) It also wasn’t chicken wire, blue glass with silver strands of paint, or a cracked windshield. However, the guesses of “broken glass” were close enough, as this was a picture of the side of a blue candle holder, with a “cracked-glass” design.

Day 91 – The Easter Bunny Ate My Post!

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky. – Rabindranath Tagore

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t the Easter Bunny that ate my post, maybe one of my three cats ate it. Not going for that, hmmmm?

I have managed to complete three full months of daily “what is it?!?” posts, can’t believe how quickly time is rushing by, just as fast as trying to keep the sun or moon in frame on the telescope. Got it! Shoot, it’s gone!

Today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture was inspired by a pattern emerging in an unexpected place. Can you tell? Do you know?

What Is It?!?

20130401-2013_04_01_4023What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 90)

It wasn’t cotton candy and it wasn’t pastry. Something we use every day can be unrecognizable when taken out of context. In this case, a stack of paper napkins.

Day 86 – Lost in the Process

I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process. – Vincent Van Gogh

Between taking and posting funky pictures, helping my son type his 20-page short story, and becoming completely enthralled with an extremely long but fabulous book, I have gotten lost in the process. I realized last night that I’m in sore need of creating art, otherwise I’m going to lose my mind.

Or maybe I already lost it a long time ago? 😉

Today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture was taken on an impulse. I don’t know what led me to this particular subject but that’s where I ended up. Now it’s time for you to try and guess its identity. Do you know?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 85)

Is it a votive holder? No. Vertical blinds? No. Light fixture? No, but it does deal with light. Overhead work lamp? Well, it is overhead. Hanging work light? No. How about the revolving light in a lighthouse? Yes!

Yesterday’s picture was of a lighthouse lens that helps refract the light. Jerry actually left a comment that explains how this works; all I know is that the subject was interesting!

Day 85 – Finding the Mystery

I do not seek. I find. – Pablo Picasso

I no longer look at “things” just as “things” anymore. Each becomes a potential image, a subject just waiting to be transformed into something that you just can’t tell what it is. Sometimes I succeed in my mission, other times not so much. But what I have found is a mission and a path of exploration. Who knows what I’ll find? Well, you will. 😉

I have not been able to restrict my postings to just “what is it?!?” mystery pictures, as some of you have seen, I am currently on an astrophotography kick, taking pictures of the sun, the moon, and the stars. I suppose the allure is that I don’t know what I’ll find until after I release the shutter. These little gifts come in the form of sun spots, crisp crater shadows, or lately, different colored streaks of stars in our night sky.

But alas, I think it would be impossible to disguise such items, so I’m left exploring our Earthly items, such as today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture. Can you tell?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 84)

Is it a “fungus among us” (algae)? The moss/fungus/green stuff that grows on tree bark? Why, yes, it is fungus/algae. But where? Underwater? No? But close! On a rock? Yes! Fugus/algae on a rock.

Yesterday’s picture was inspired by that funky green algae/fungus and tiny crustaceans covering the rocks in a jetty on Tybee Island, Georgia. I thought the algae/fungus looks almost yarn-like. But obviously didn’t to Gail or Steve! Or Jerry. 😉 (See there, Jerry, gave you honorable mention!)

Day 69 – Where Did the Time Go?

The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. – Abraham Lincoln

We are pretending that this post is actually on Sunday, March 10th, 2013. While relaxing with my girls at the beach, not only did I experience technical difficulties, I also missed a post. OOPS! But here I am, making up for it. Plus, at some part of the world it’s still yesterday, right?

Today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture is ready for you to guess. Can you tell?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 68)

Was it foam on a mattress? No. How about hard boiled eggs cooked together? Not that either. Alright, what about non-clear plastic bubble wrap? No. The picture was of a golf ball.

Day 67 – This Is Not the Droid You’re Looking For

Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose. – Yoda

I’m from the original generation of Star Wars fans, but my husband is the ultimate fan; he’s built his own Stormtrooper outfit (he’s part of the 501st Legion), created himself as Darth Paul (with the creepy contact lenses and all), and his latest, greatest invention, which took quite a long time (but not as long as building his own telescope), and also occupies a good portion of our living room (and kitchen nook, where created), is the subject of yesterday’s picture. That image was part of the LED lights on Paul’s R2D2, the droid from Star Wars. Actually, I think it’s pretty awesome that we have a moving, speaking, lit up, better-than-the-original R2D2 from the movie. After all, this one moves on its own (by remote control), requires no actor inside. The only thing he doesn’t do, unfortunately, is vacuum my house. Paul was my inspiration for this picture, he even suggested using R2D2 as a subject to see if people could guess what it was if taken out of context.

Anyway, R2D2 is interesting to look at with so many pieces and parts; however, that dome and color of blue is so iconic, I knew there was an inherent risk of some folks knowing exactly what yesterday’s image was, and I was correct. Most Star Wars geeks (fanatics?) could spot it just as a thumbnail, but I thank them all for not exposing the droid! Now imagine R2D2 beeping. Cute, eh?

Okay, today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture is not the droid you are looking for. 🙂 It’s not of a robot or droid. But what is it? Can you tell. Do you know?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 66)

How many people can say that they have an actual R2D2 droid/robot roaming their houses? My hubby, Paul, spent well over a year constructing his own R2D2, building a lot of his own parts, I really admire him for creating something so complex without a kit or instruction book or anything like that. The image from yesterday was a part of the LED lights on R2D2’s dome.

The only guess made was braille for a cell phone, but also had a couple comments of “whatever it is, it looks interesting.” And indeed, it is!

I took this picture when Paul was almost finished with R2D2. He was my test subject while using my backdrop for the first time.

… beep beep beep R2D2 noises

Day 65 – It’s a Mystery

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. – Albert Einstein

Some days I know exactly what I want to photograph, I have an idea of what to write, and can whip out a blog post in minutes.

Today isn’t one of those days. So today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture’s introduction is short and sweet. Here it is, do you know? Can you guess?

What Is It?!?

What What That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 64)

Was it granite or marble? No. What about frost or broken glass? Not that either. A crater or volcanic ash? Great guess. But no. How about floor glue or caulking putty? No. Would I be so sneaky to use the same type of picture two days in a row?

You bet! Yesterday’s picture was of another gemstone. When I was photographing it and examining it closely, it looked like water splashing out of ice to me. Unfortunately, I don’t know what type of gemstone. Here’s a different perspective. 🙂

Day 56 – The World Is a Book …

The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. – Saint Augustine

I was blessed with a mother who taught – and showed – my brother and I that traveling is just as important as a traditional schooling education. I have been so many places, from exotic Hawaii to glacier-filled Alaska, I’ve strolled the streets all over the world, been exposed to so many different cultures and foods and experiences. But since starting this blog and becoming a stats addict, I have had so many visitors from other countries that I haven’t yet visited, my bucket list grows each day. So many places, so little time!

Today’s mystery “what is it?!?” picture is the last of my stash that I took before our little vacation this past weekend. My muse did me well last week by showing me so many visions, and I am starting to call out again for my next inspiration. Do you know? Can you guess?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 55)

One of my all-time favorite guesses: “Cheezits floating in a sea of sriacha sauce!” Alas, that’s not what the subject was. Nor was it tile or a back splash. “Reverse lights” was close enough, since the picture was the reflector part of brake lights (a different car than the other pic I posted of brake lights, I know, I’m a dirty rascal!). Just goes to show, everything and everyone has a different perspective!

A Word of Thanks

I’ve been honored that Krzysztof Alexandrowicz (http://artslooking.wordpress.com) has reblogged two of my posts. He has also complimented my work, which makes me feel really, really good. I am so thankful for feedback, and like I said, I feel honored that someone, another artist, appreciates my work. So thank you, Krzysztof!

And then, today, I found out that my friend, Carissa (http://ramblingsofabipolarwoman.wordpress.com) nominated me for the The Very Inspiring Blogger 2013 award. Her kind words also put a very large smile on my face today! We both agreed that the best part about blogging is making connections with other people. Thank you, Carissa!

To the rest of my blogger community and followers, I also thank each of you for taking the time to peruse my funky pictures and read some of my rambling posts. You are a welcome addition to my space here in cyber world. Ciao, friends!

Day 54 – The Daily Picture

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Another later-than-normal post, I was pleasantly surprised to find a friend clamoring for my daily picture, and come to find out, her entire family is now playing the daily “what is it?!?” guessing game. That is awesome! You inspire me to continue expanding my 365-day project.

So because I knew my time would be limited this weekend, I made sure I had all the daily mystery “what is it?!?” pictures stocked up. Here is today’s. Do you know? Can you guess?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 53)

I stumped my son and nieces with yesterday’s picture, although the subject was quite familiar with all, suddenly it became a foreign object. Well, except for the cross they all immediately noticed. But they didn’t see what it actually was, the photograph was of a bicycle’s tire tread. 🙂
