Day 145 – A Whale of a Great Time

Blue, green, grey, white, or black; smooth, ruffled, or mountainous; that ocean is not silent. –¬†H. P. Lovecraft

There’s something about going through photographs taken during a trip, it’s like you get to relive those moments and notice things you didn’t originally¬†see . Since I’ve been suffering from that throbbing aching tooth (which has to be extracted on Wednesday, ick), I’ve had plenty of time to view the 1,000 + images from our adventure. I’ve even managed to find a photograph that I can use for today’s mystery “what is it?!?” image. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Is It?!?

What Was That?!? Yesterday’s Picture (Day 144)

Gail thought it might be some kind of dinosaur bones. Not from a dinosaur. Jerry thought it might be bones of a Manatee. Not from a Manatee. Jerry finally guessed: it was bones from a whale.

What you saw was a flipper from the complete skeleton from a Right Whale (at the Georgia Aquarium). This type of whale got its name from the beginning of the whaling industry, in that these were the “right” whales to catch. Isn’t it interesting how the flipper actually looks like bones from a hand?
