Weekly Photo Challenge: Unexpected

The first time I ever attached my camera to the telescope with a solar filter and took pictures of the sun, I captured several images of solar flares, which was very unexpected. Imagine my excited amazement when I saw this unexpected image on the computer screen for the first time!

We live on a road called “Setting Sun Trail,” and the name is well deserved.

Sunspots Galore

Thanks to Andrew for the heads-up about the solar activity and sunspots, including a massive one!

Sunspots! Sunspots!

Lots of solar activity today, numerous spots viewed while taking pictures using my camera, telescope, and solar filter.

The Traveling Sun Spot

I viewed the sun at three different times today, and each time this glorious orb gave much to see. Following are pics from the second and third viewings (using my telescope, camera, and solar filter). Click the pictures to see the descriptions and all of the sun spots!

This first set of photographs was taken around 2:30 p.m. 3/30/13.

The “monster” spot has traveled since earlier this morning (see earlier post).

Note in the lower left quadrant another monster spot/flare.

This same spot/flare appears in this photograph, too, and then disappears.

Now we’re into early evening, around 5:30 p.m. Look how far the spot has traveled now!

This is the view with the doubler attached (this has not been cropped). Note how the sun spots have traveled again.

The monster spot is quite visible and very active.

Finally! A flare coming off of the sun.

Monster Sun Spot!

Lots of solar activity today, including a monster sun spot!

This photo was taken with a 2x “doubler” so this picture is not cropped! Looks much more impressive through the eyepiece, in this case, my camera.

Solar Sensations

Lots of sun spots today.

Amazing how the sun changes from day to day.

Even changing hour to hour.

Red Sun Rising

The sun is alive with sun spots today! Got a new t-ring adapter that allows my camera to attach to my telescope, and am very happy that it works much easier than my older one. I’ll be taking more pictures this evening!

Sun Glorious Sun

Sun spot located upper right quadrant.

Is that a sun spot on the top, too?

This spot (flare?) suddenly appeared.

Managed to get some sun time in today, these pictures were taken using the telescope as the camera lens. Note the spot/flare that appears in the lower left quadrant, it was only captured in one photo.

Seeing Sun Spots

Broke out the solar filter again for my camera lens and managed to spot two different sun spots.
