What Is It?!? – Week 24/52

Experience is one thing you can’t get for nothing. – Oscar Wilde

Trying to get back on track with posting these “what is it?!?” pictures on time. I haven’t yet decided what my mystery subject will be. That’s what happens when you’ve come up with 389 subjects so far … sometimes the muse just doesn’t call or beckon me. No fears though, I’ll find it! By the time I figure this out, I’ll be inserting the picture below. It’s odd writing “Do you know? Can you tell?” when I don’t even know myself! LOL

P.S. I ended up taking photographs in black and white today, and I came up with this image. So no color changes, there was none to begin with! 🙂

What Was That?!? Last Week’s Picture – Week 23/52

I’ll admit, I was running so far behind, that I reached into last year’s bucket of mystery subjects and picked out one I was pretty sure would be recognizable. Consider this your easy week. Because everyone got it!

The winning ding-ding-dings could be heard throughout the land, as scores of you guessed correctly, “toy Army men,” including Fabrio, Brenda, Jude, and Sarah. Yay!

Yes, what you saw were a bunch of toy Army men. Sarah commented, “Isn’t great that it’s such a simple toy that holds so many memories and is so recognisable to us?” Yes, indeed, I wholeheartedly agree!

What Is It?!? – Week 19/52

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream. – Edgar Allan Poe

Wow. Week 19, I can barely keep up, here I am a day late with very little time left for this day. Such is my life. Actually, this seems to be the norm now. Always busy, never enough time. Must make time to dream. So anyway, for the nineteenth time this year, I challenge you to tell me what this is. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Was That?!? – Week 18/52 (Last Week’s Picture)

Fabio started off with, “Let me try again… maybe the seat of a chair? I know I am not good…” Alas, not the seat of a chair, but remember, this isn’t about winning, it’s about sharing your perspective! Brenda guessed, “placemat?” Not a placemat either. “Outdoor furniture?” Not outdoor furniture. But you can use it outdoors. “Athletic gear?” Not athletic gear. Jude mused, “Fabric?” Not fabric. “Leather?” Not leather. “Mmm… I like the light on this object so maybe it is something hard, like china or stone?” Not anything hard, this is flexible. “A plastic chair?” Not a plastic chair. “This is going to be some American thing that we don’t have over here isn’t it! Is it some sort of waterproof covering that you throw over furniture?” Actually, ding ding ding! You got it, indeed waterproof covering, in this case, a tarp. One thing I really like about having this blog is learning how some things are so different “across the pond.” I am always enlightened. In the meantime, Sarah guessed, “Is it a hat? Woven from straw or something similar?” Not a hat and not straw. “Ah, Jude got it! I never would have got that!!” I also love the interaction. Well done, folks! That was a great round of playing the weekly “what is it?!?” guessing game!

What Was That?!? (Last Week’s Picture) – Week 17/52

Fabio started the guessing game, “Schelley, is it a cork?” Not a cork. Cee mused, “No clue. I’ll have tot put on my thinking cap. Maybe part of a tattoo.” Not part of a tattoo, but I can see that. Sarah said, “Looks like someone went a bit mad with some eyeliner on the back of their hand!!!” LOL! Not eyeliner gone mad. “Is it a piece of decorated pottery?” Ding ding ding! Yes, it is a piece of decorated pottery. Do you know what in particular made the decoration? “Yay me … I suspect it was string dipped in paint!” Not a string dipped in paint. “Was it something simple like a felt tipped pen?” Not simple. So what was it?

What you saw was a piece of horsehair pottery. This technique, created by Native Americans, was told to have happened when a Pueblo woman’s hair brushed against the very hot pottery just out of the kiln. What resulted was a beautiful pattern. She played with applying different items, and stumbled upon horsehair creating the nicest effect. It is indeed beautiful!

Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. – Henry David Thoreau

Oh, how I wish I had more time to go a-fishing. Don’t we all? Well, a day late, but here nonetheless, your 17th weekly “what is it?!?” mystery picture is finally ready for you to guess. What do you think it is? Can you tell?

What Was That?!!? (Last Week’s Picture) – Week 16/52

Fabio started the guessing game, “Schelley, let me try this one. It seems that you finally have heard our cries and put up something easier this week. Is it the back of a chair? If I am wrong, it will not be a surprise. Please bear with my ignorance…PS: Despite my complaints, frankly, I love this part of your blog show. Bravissimo, Schelley!!!” It almost pained me to say that this isn’t the back of a chair. But I’m so glad you enjoy these little challenges! And then isotel came along and figured it out. “I think it’s a … key?” Ding ding ding! Yep, it’s a key. Great guess! Sébastien even got it right. “This has to be definitely a metallic object..A cog or key?” Correct on two counts: metallic and a key. Double ding ding dings! Sarah said, “Well I never would have guessed it was pollen! I got this one, a key, but not quick enough” Triple ding ding dings!

So I guess that was an easy one, eh? Yes, what you saw was a key. A key that I found cleaning a drawer. A key to what? I have no idea. So even though the challenge was easy, the key truly is a “mystery’ subject! 😀

What Was That?!? (Last Week’s Picture) – Week 15/52

Kay started the guessing game with, “Is it water? Like from a sprinkler?” Not water. Shahn mused, “I was thinking water as well. The side of a rock?” Not the side of a rock. Sébastien said, “Believe I took this shot myself…Looks like rock texture to me…” Alas, not a rock. Sarah asked, “The edge of textured materiel, like a coat sleeve cuff perhaps?” Not material.

So what was it?!?

If you live in the South, you’re well acquainted with this pesky yellow stuff. Yep, it’s pollen. In this case, a mound of pollen on my green Saturn Vue. It’s everywhere!

Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life. – Omar Khayyam

Life is full-speed ahead! I am hoping that summer will bring with it a refreshing pace in life. (… and leave the heat and humidity behind, that would be such an oh-so-nice summer!)

Enough about the speed of life (which seems sometimes to be speedier than the speed of light!).

Without further delay, your 15th weekly “what is it?!?” mystery picture is ready for your guessing pleasure. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Was That?!? (Last Week’s Picture) – Week 14/52

Sébastien started off the guessing game with, “Thanks for the answer to last week. Seems so obvious now. For this week, looks like something melted…So first thought would be snow but I’m also thinking about sugar…” This isn’t melted, not sugar or snow, but interesting perspectives! Lilmisspoutine guessed, “toilet paper.” Not toilet paper. LOL Sarah came along and mused, “It seems so obvious now! Ok, guess no.1 for this week – bread?” Drum roll please … Ding ding ding! Bread indeed. Wow! “Good grief! First guess! It just made me think of the lovely fresh bread my hubby makes at the weekend.” There’s nothing like fresh baked bread. Cari jumped in and said, “Not that you’d have reason to believe that I got this right without looking at the previous comment (lol) but I really was about to say that I thought it looked like bread.” Then you get a ding-ding-ding, too! Fabio guessed, “Some kind of resin, Schelley? You already know that I am not good at all with guessing…” Not some kind of resin, but great perspective! And it’s not about how good you are at guessing, it’s all about sharing your perspective.

So yes, what you saw was bread. Good old fashioned bread.

P.S. Each week you’ll find the answer to the previous week’s mystery picture. I would never leave you hanging! 😉

Weekly Photo Challenge: Perspective

2013_03_28_3385 2013_03_28_3382

Now if this challenge isn’t literally “right up my alley,” I don’t know what is. My blog, What Is It?!? – A Project in Perspective, is all about – yep, you guessed it – perspective! For this challenge, here are two different (and never before posted) perspectives of a former “mystery subject,” but this time, with the answer. 🙂

What you see is the side of a glass pane of an outdoor lamp. This subject generated so many different perspectives (aka “guesses”); if you want to see what all of the guesses were, check out the blog post here. This time around, I converted the images to black and white.

To see other interpretations of Perspective, check out the Daily Post’s Weekly Photo Challenge here.

Life must be lived as play. – Plato

It’s Monday, which means it’s time for a “what is it?!?” post! So without further ado, here is your ninth weekly “what is it?!?” mystery picture, ready for your guessing pleasure. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Was That?!? Last Week’s Picture (Week 8/52)

Jude mused, “Looks like golden shredded wheat all fused together, but I’m sure it isn’t that. Alternatively is it some kind of foam packaging material?” Not shredded what or foam packaging material. Interesting perspectives! Fabio pondered, “Schelley, it seems like a braided bread. I know it is not… “ Alas, not braided bread but I can see that! (Mmmmmmmm, bread.)  Sarah guessed, “Ginger? The spice that is!” Not ginger, the spice. (Nor Ginger, the woman!) Mic’s perspective, “My first impression was that it was a close-up of a coin. It looks like gold but is more likely brass…a decorative dish or sculpture?” Not brass, not a dish or sculpture, but yes, it does look like gold! But it’s not. So what was it?!?

What you saw was a section of stained glass. 🙂

What Is It?!? – Week 5/52

Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken. – Frank Herbert

I’m amazed we’re already five weeks into this year and already into our second month. Yes, time has started getting faster and faster and faster. I can’t keep up! So please excuse my one-day late “what is it?!?” mystery picture post. Life got the better of me yesterday, but today is already a better day. So with that said, here is your fifth “what is it?!?” mystery picture of the year. Do you know? Can you tell?

What Was That?!? – Last Week’s Picture (Week 4/52)

Sarah started off the short guessing game. “Sparks?” Well, ding ding ding! From what though? “Now that’s the bit I don’t know! Bedtime here so I shall think on it overnight and come up with some wild guesses. Great image!” Jude guessed, “Sparks from a barbecue?” Kind of, although we weren’t cooking anything. Then Marilyn wrapped it up, “Looks like the trails of a sparkler when it’s moving, or the embers popping from a campfire. I have some pictures of campfires in the teepee that look just like that.” Embers popping from the fire would be correct! I was experimenting with a slow shutter speed and was fascinated by the flying streaks of embers. Too cool! Or should I say too hot? LOL

So yes, what you saw were the embers/sparks from an outside fire. We occasionally have to have those here in Florida. ha ha (At this time last week it was below freezing. Today? I’m wearing a tee-shirt. Go figure.)
